SHORT DESCRIPTION

This large scale charcoal drawing, measuring 59,4 x 84,1 cm, is a bespoke portrait commissioned by annabel hartts and developed through a live model drawing session. Conceived as an exploration of lines of identity and the human form, the work places presence, gesture, and individuality at the centre of its visual language.

Working with charcoal allows the drawing to exist in a direct and honest relationship with the body. Each line carries intention and immediacy, recording movement, weight, and subtle shifts in posture. rather than aiming for idealisation, the portrait focuses on recognition, capturing the subject through marks that reflect both physical form and emotional resonance.

As a commissioned artwork, this piece is shaped through dialogue and observation. The live session becomes an essential part of the process, where time, attention, and shared space inform the outcome. The drawing holds traces of this encounter, preserving moments of stillness and tension that cannot be replicated through reference images alone.

The concept of bespoke portraiture is central to this work. Annabel Hartts is not represented as an abstract figure, but as a specific presence, articulated through expressive lines that define character as much as anatomy. The human form becomes a landscape of identity, revealed through contrast, erasure, and density of mark.

Ultimately, this charcoal drawing stands as a singular and personal artwork. It reflects the value of commissioned pieces rooted in lived experience, where drawing becomes an act of listening, and where the portrait emerges as a collaboration between artist, subject, and moment.
